On March 30th, this time back on our usual Thursday night, we welcome in the hard hitter known as Mella Dee. Hailing from Doncaster, Ryan Aitchison, who also accounts for one half of the Mista Men Garage duo, has been pursuing his solo work as Mella Dee, drawing on old school jungle and garage influences as well baseline from the north and the grime and dub step of the south.
Mella Dee has had a number of releases since his first back in 2012 on Slit Jockey Records. Since then he’s explored a different style and feeling with each, and his influences can definitely be heard throughout. “Ripe Traxx” below from 2013 is one of his lighter ones with a playful baseline and loads of swing. The darker side of Mella Dee see’s him provide some serious energy. The track “Heaven”, features a vocal driven atmosphere and rumbling lows paired over and under an intricate breakbeat.
Recently Mella Dee’s been on a run of gigs throughout the UK and is set to feature once again for the third year running at Annie Mac’s Lost and Found over in Malta. One of his more recent tracks became a firm favourite at dbe over the warmer months. If you were around, you would’ve heard it.
We’re expecting Mella Dee to continue showing everyone why he is at where he is now in his career. It’s always an exciting time waiting for him to drop some new music and to see which direction he’ll be taking things in next. Ryan’s also placed once again on the lineup for this years Hideout Festival in Croatia, he is without doubt a brilliant addition to the bill and we can’t wait to catch him out there. For now though, it’s time to get ready for March 30th.
